That's probably the "volume wars" effect.
...and digital clipping, that'll give you a headache soon enough. 

The cd medium has much better dynamic range than vinyl, that's it's strong 
point.

There's no actual need to compress the music on a cd at all.

Eventually that overcompressed music will be considered an un-listenable 
oddity.
