The known instruments which come closest to the sound would be a clarinette, but all these possible bendings and fluctuations in the sound... Either you record them, then they are bound in, or you don't record them and play more static, then you could maybe just use a square wave and mangle that instead... But don't get me wrong, whenever I hear a beautiful instrument, I also would like to record and mangle it. Just do it. My own experience is, that its either such a personal sound, that it overtakes the character of a piece, and whenever I hear it, it reminds me on how much more expressive the original is... Polyrisized the Voice on my MySpace site is an example of using a single sample for a piece which I think works. But I'd never be able to use it for any other piece again. Thus it can't be the source for general synthesis... http://www.myspace.com/ondesmemorielles I also do love samples...
