Either you record them, then they are bound in, or you don't record them 
and play more static, then you could maybe just use a square wave and 
mangle that instead...

But don't get me wrong, whenever I hear a beautiful instrument, I also 
would like to record and mangle it. Just do it. My own experience is, 
that its either such a personal sound, that it overtakes the character 
of a piece, and whenever I hear it, it reminds me on how much more 
expressive the original is...

Polyrisized the Voice on my MySpace site is an example of using a single 
sample for a piece which I think works. But I'd never be able to use it 
for any other piece again. Thus it can't be the source for general 
synthesis...
