Well, I was putting that forward as a possibility, I haven't yet
experienced that a shorted cable damages the firewire card in the pc.

Did you confirm that this was the case?

So I was thinking that if the RME wasn't to blame, must be the cable.






The firewire connectors are pretty fragile, and certainly the 
circuit board in Matthias' firewire guitar fried do to a bad connection.
I think it was the socket in that case, but the overall design isn't
robust. ( certainly not good to use a guitar lead )

The cable carries power, and there isn't much separating the power 
connection
to the signal connection.
