Accessing a game controller's buttons/analog-joysticks, as well as the programming of the realtime logic and MIDI messages you mentioned, would be trivial in keykit (see http://nosuch.com/keykit ) - a few dozen lines of code for everything, and I can help with an initial template that you can modify.
