Maybe I'm just easy, but I loved 'Confederacy of Dunces' AND 'The Time 
Traveler's Wife' AND 'Cryptonomicon'...

Not sci-fi at all, (and not even very far OT) but I did recommend to Rick 
offlist Alex Ross's "The Rest Is Noise". Shall we consider that particular 
kettle of fish open?
