You can usually find out if you dig hard enough.  This paper is a bit old 
but still relevant:

Bottom line: Get a TI if you can.  Ricoh hate is pretty universal.  VIA 
might work.  If you can't determine the origin get a good return policy :-)

But what if the manufacturer doesn't state what one they use?
