software samplers

i searched the archives to no avail. so here goes:

i would like a proper (software) sampler. i would like to not pay $400 for kontakt (although kontakt seems awesome). i would like more features than things like shortcircuit offer (a less-clunky gui would be nice too). i do not need a 40gb sample library as i have zero intention of using anything other than my own samples.

so...anybody out there using a sampler please contribute your opinion. to get what i want am i just gonna have to drop some serious $$$? is there some top-secret machine that is both affordable and powerful? any and all help is appreciated.
