Re: best software strings

I think thats the group of sounds that I was talking about that I like in logic...
I do try to build up some layers, cos in clasical music, that how it goes. One can cheat a bit by having a lead violin and a lead oboe and a lead trombone or trumpet, and using "ensemble" samples for the rest of that section of the orchestra. so you can nearly get away with having only 9 tracks for a whole orch.
Lead Violin - Ensemble Strings - Oboe/Clarinet - Ensemble woodwind - Lead trumpet/Trumpet - ensemble Brass - piano - percusion - Misc (maybe harp or something)
However, Its very dificult to use "ensemble" samples normally, as they tend to sound like the whole orchestra is modulating key, when you change them. I have a few setups of ensembles doing a few intervals, but then one is restricted by what the sample recordists chose.

digression...

I always choose sounds in Logic via the right hand genre box, Im not sure if this is always the best way. For finding Apple Loops I believe it is, but I would like to simply chug through all the sounds AFTERWARDS, when I have written a part using a placeholder instrument, usually piano. To be honest I hate the actual intruments in Logic, they sound great, but they dont look like anthing I know, I used Reason for years for my corporate music jobs, and loved it (despite the sounds) cos for me who had a rack of modular gear, and have owned more synths than Ive had.. er... sex with black women... I just KNEW how to operate the synths in Reason.

... and back to the topic...

I am however loving the Kore Player and or Kontakt player instruments from Native instruments, they a simple basic and sound pretty good... glad to hear the orch sounds are good, will investigate... LASS looks great!

"Layering lots of instruments" tend to sound good when done by the
guys usually hired for doing that. It is a specialized competence and
it takes a hell of a lot of computing power to set up a virtual
symphonic orchestra "in the box". So your point is totally accurate
;-))  Have a look at the Garageband orchestral apple loops that got
installed with the Logic Studio package. There should be a number of
useful stereo recordings of specific groups from an orchestra playing
melodies, scales etc. If you find a good sample you may need to cut,
paste and transpose to fit it in. If mocking it up in Logic you may
find use for the Bounce In Place feature as well as the Make Sampler
Instrument feature. You may also need to bounce an apple loop into a
new audio file in order to escape its pesky habit of following tempo
etc
