If I remember that correctly:
"Backward" (and its companion function, "Forward") switch transport to 
backward and forward, respectively.
"Reverse" switches to backward if you're currently playing forward and 
vice versa.
This is mainly useful for scripting, because you can avoid branches that 
way.
