"The Liquid Piano" is an excerpt from a performance I did with Dave Bryant (Ornette Coleman alumnus) on piano, and Eric Sack on camera. Dancer Nicole Bindler makes a non-real-tine appearance, as does old friend Margie (Greta) Canty. I run a monthly series called Visual Music Live, at Outpost 186, a cozy performance space near Inman Square in Cambridge, MA. I brought 4 or 5 DVD players, 3 video mixers and a large number of pre-made DVD's to mix, while Dave played the house piano and Eric sent me a video feed with ample opportunities for feedback. The performance was completely improvised --- the only preplanning was starting out the set with imagery of water. This piece is taken from the start of the set, hence the title. My aim (both while performing and while preparing DVD's for use in these performances) is to treat my visual materials improvisationally, with the same attitude and some of the same strategies that improvising musicians use. I try to create pieces that are like music, but have both a visual and a sonic element BTW Some of my photography can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/collections/72157603627170351/ -- " Practice makes perfect, imperfect is better." -- Paul Bley Emile Tobenfeld, Ph.
