Most tap tempo functions doesn't work good enough for music. Try using
Live's plugin Looper instead! You don't need to loop any audio into
it, just set it to direct the global tempo for Live. It works as
smooth as the EDP when on its own :-)

Detailed:
Assign a MIDI Note coming from kicking a switch on the FCB to Ableton
Looper's Record button. Set the plugin to lead the tempo. Now kick
twice; at the downbeat of a bar and then at the downbeat of next bar.
Live corrects its master tempo.
