My quick rundown (after about 4 listens) It's short - only 8 songs of 4-5 minutes each. It's about as different from their last 10 years of work as Kid A was from the stuff before it. The emotive string orchestration is almost completely gone. Instead, it's a lot of loop-based music. (Not live looping per say, but that the music sounds like it's made of repeating clips rather than live instrumentation.) At first, it sounds a lot like a Thom Yorke solo cd. It sounds a lot like the Eraser. It also seems a lot closer to Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" album, in that the first 4 songs seem to be made of many short-duration sound clips (not afrofunk though), and the second half is more ballads and long-form songs. There's a lot of apparent influence from live looping, but I'm not sure if it really *is* live looping. For example, Thom Yorke'll sing a line, then it will come back as a musical element with a lot of distortion. In several songs, it comes back as subtle irregular loops. It's good. "In Rainbows" was the album that made me a fan. Between then and now I bought everything back to Kid A, including Jonny's and Thom's solo albums. If it weren't for Thom's voice, I'd think it was a completely different band. (Drummer) Phil Selway has a solo record out too, which I haven't heard...I think it would've been cool to hear his voice in a track or too. There's already an internet meme where Thom's dance from the "Lotus Flower" video has been superimposed over Beyonce's "Put a Ring on It" song. It's pretty funny. I think my favorite song is "Little by Little". -- Matt Davignon mattdavignon@gmail.com www.ribosomemusic.com Rigs! www.youtube.com/user/ribosomematt
