OT: radiohead (then: Our Band Could Be Your Life)
ok, for some reason i read the posts "up" on the L-D.com website, so i always read them backwards...odd i know...
the radiohead thing...i loved their 1st album (one w/ creep), almost bought their 2nd album, but didn't. around '00, "Q" mag had their "best album list since Q had been in production"
and OK computer was the top on the list. shortly after that i bought a copy on sale at some store, listened to it, couldn't honestly get into it. thom's voice just grates on me.... i think i would get it out every couple of months and listen to it, still had the same thoughts. (although i should say that vernon reid did an instrumental version of paranoid android on one of his solo albums that i love.....)
i think i had read that johnny g. used a korg kaoss pad w/ his guitar on some tracks, and around this time i had one, and loved it. and i did hear it's use on the album a few times here & there, and thought it was cool, but still couldn't get into it. i heard snippets of the kid a & sister album, was talking to a friend about it, and from what i heard, it just reminded me of pink floyd, which i was never a huge fan, love david g & all (actually prefer the poppie syd b version of the band much better!)
anyway, i've seen some bits/pieces of vids of radiohead, there was one where johnny g does a freakout guitar solo w/ msp/max i think, and i thought it was brilliant, but i figured that's a small portion of what they do (so i do like a small portion). i appreciate that i think they are doing out there stuff in a pop format, so people who like them are getting expanded a bit, & i appreciate that they're able to do what they want w/o label constraints, but again, i think they had what 4-5 albums w/ label help (and if you read anything about labels, generally the successes have a lot of $$ behind them)...
as for: OUR BAND COULD BE YOUR LIFE, i can't recommend this book enough, i read it when it came out a few yrs ago....i think it really put in context the so called "indie" movement of the 80s (at least the "big bands of the indies"), most of the bands built success on small labels, then jumped to majors, which most of the bands imploded (lots of factors of course). but it's a good, interesting read....
w/ all this radiohead talk, i may have to sit down and listen to some youtube clips again....which i did a few weeks ago and listened to eno's new album that way, in order, which i thought was a great listen, may need to get it....
