Thinking out loud:Hardware looper with digital ins/outs?

I was just thinking what it would be like to have a hardware looper that 
had digital in and/or digital outs instead of analog. That way you get to 
choose the quality of your front end but you get a device that's only 
meant to do looping and do it well.  Would it make it easier to build not 
having to convert the audio coming in and going out? You could go analog 
into something like the fireface and then use the fireface's spdif in/outs 
like they are an effects loop with the digital only looper pedal.
