Octave shifters etc change the instrument's timbre. If you're not hip to that, another strategy to expand your performance palette over the bass as well as mid and high note range is to play an instrument that offers such an extended note range. Myself this has led me to learning the EWI and the Chapman Stick. It's a nice feeling not having to rely on effects or extended looping techniques for the low bass but simply being able to play the stuff as you want it to sound.
