Vista was the best thing to ever happen to
Linux.
Unfortunately with the 11 series of Ubuntu I feel
its lost its focus too and will start evolving much the same way. It was
the first "buggy" Linux I ever had. The 10 series was much
better.

I too have WinXP and the latest SP, 3 (?). Works really
fine. Never will take the chance to try Vista, will go straight
through a new computer w/ Win7 route.

the USB devices?
From everything I've ever heard,
Vista may be the worst Windows OS for music in the past 15
years. It's just horrible.
Win XP Service Pack 3 kicks ass on it
even though it is a previous OS and I hear that Win 7 is even better than
that.
Typically, Windows OS have issues until at least a couple
of service packs come out (which is usually at least two years after they
are introduced)............I have to say, the Win XP really runs
robustly for me.
Painful as it sounds, I'd highly recommend
that you back all your stuff up and clean install with a much more
efficient OS than Vista. My wife has it on her laptop and I can
say I truly hate it.
