For what you'd spend on a hardware sampler, even a refurb'd iPad2 (http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC980LL/A) would be affordable … especially since it would still be covered by an Apple warranty (and on these things, there are no moving parts, no hard drives to fail). Something to consider.
