Might be worth getting it repaired, just so you can start using the iOS apps — I started off using a 32 GB 3rdGen iTouch. Once you've bought the apps, you can transfer them to the iPad should you want the larger surface. It CAN be done on the iPhone/iPod form factor, but it's nice to have the room of the iPad.
