Right you are.  I'm sure, too, that the units they had were not exactly off-the-shelf but extra-special custom orders with all the best components and zero bloatware.

Reliability and other quality-related aspects vary even within a
single manufacturer.    In the survey on this page (for desktops, not
laptops):

note the huge difference between Dell's business line and their home
line.  Dell's product line is wide and deep and provides lots of
options, which can be enticing when you know exactly what you want.
Every new model is an opportunity for them to either succeed or fail,
and it's hard to tell which it is until feedback on forums starts
rolling in on a particular model.  I never order a laptop model
without consulting feedback on forums for that particular model.
