Also this comparison table may be of use: http://www.keithmcmillen.com/support/stepcomparison/I have my students working with both at the moment. I like the 12 step's octave control and single and multi key modes. Re: Per's concern, I find you can improve responsiveness of the controller by tweaking the global sensitivity. This is a good approach to get the most out of the tilt function, for example. See p. 16 in the manual. The softstep is great for the usual parametric control: toggle, pressure, XY.
If anyone is interested in purchasing, I rep in NJ/NY. Get in touch, off list.

I just picked up a 12 step this weekend. I love it so far. I only ever need to send midi notes to control my software and I struggled to program the softstep to do that simple task when I first got it. I just plugged the 12 step in and it worked. Not as much tactile feedback as I would like but the switches are silent and I like them better than the softstep. Softstep also has a bug where it can't send midi note 0 that they haven't fixed for years now. Of course the looper in my strymon goes into record with midi note 0.I'll hold on to the softstep for now in case I want to do some crazy midi controlling in the future but I have a feeling ill probably sell it.I haven't had any problem at all with the softstep, but I'll grab a twelve step to compare for sure. My feeling is that the softstep is off the hook for programmability and the 12 step is less so.
