NW LoopFest Video Index

Greetings Fellow Loopers!

The NW LoopFest has come and gone.  And 2017 could be the final NW LoopFest.  It's been 5 years of electronic fun: new bands, new tech, new sounds.  I'm not sure when I'll be back in the Pacific NW, if ever.   The independent spirit is alive and well up there, but alas, there really isn't a community hanging together although the noise/experimental scene seems to be blossoming.  And it's just too hard to try and run the thing when I've been gone 5 years and live 2,000 miles away.  But at least the video archive will live on as a testament to the many artists who chose to participant.

This year's festival was in Newport, OR and featured a lot of first time loopfest performers.

The webpage can be found here:  http://www.noahpeterson.com/nw_loopfest/

If you want skip all the verbage and just experience the vibe here's the playlist for all 48 videos:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqmZwompN0w&list=PLjiWJF83CBinlgQ-W9p33aJtraH9Axo_a

I was the opening performer.  It was nice to actually play this year although I did short set.  I debuted my new program "i sing the sax electric" which focuses less on structure and tunes and is more riff and beat based with the addition of some tech.  I've enjoyed the "Solo Sax Sessions" but I had been feeling quite stale with it for some time.  This was the beginning of a new direction for my own looping which I've been enjoying ever since.

Here's my two videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqmZwompN0w&list=PLjiWJF83CBikR61t-83xrIlObqBwvipd9

Next up was Stargasm from Portland, OR.   This appropriately named artist is new to looping and a did bang up job on his set.  I enjoyed his set quite a bit.  2 videos of space-jam meanderings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBTceMBMppc&list=PLjiWJF83CBimD2vMPUhEF0NzItMG5i8O5

Twenty-Three Suns from Portland, OR did a lovely ambient jam.  He came to last year's fest and it was a pleasure to have him for 2017. 1 video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCCAbR-m0lc

Waffle Taco from Portland, OR showed up for another round of their own take on loop duos.  They have taken a keen interest in the loopfest and were always eager to participant.  Kyle, the trumpet player, even won some gear this year.  4 videos of songs and extended jams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugwRr3armio&list=PLjiWJF83CBin6Nmn5DpCSq26RREh9zS-s

Luthor Maggot out of Oregon brought the noise.  This is some great ambient/noise (not harsh at all).  1 video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR4gUQQhPTY

Nathan North from Billings, MT did a nice job with his songs.  5 videos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSIKMofa9Og&list=PLjiWJF83CBikDxWPn8dXlO9HeODdqglfi

Saundra's Electric Nightlife from Newport Bay, OR did some great indie rock covers.  She performed last year and this year co-produced the fest with me.  4 videos of a very enjoyable performance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sR6xLPaHx8&list=PLjiWJF83CBinLRtWvwuxqKbzjtqn0l_RI

Gordo from Phoenix, AZ was by far the most entertaining and high energy performer.  Doing nothing but rock covers, his frenetic energy and switching of instruments was a ton of fun! His 4 videos are a blast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZa2VL6YZ4Q&list=PLjiWJF83CBimLojmpqHy6ng1199W63wWa

John Firshi out of Idaho does some beautiful and simple loops.  Sometimes less is more.  Very nice stuff, 2 videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL53ny6sBLw&list=PLjiWJF83CBim3JswcfZmt_YgyoU8JBHki

Philophobia out of Corvallis, OR does some fun indie rock loops with guitar and drums.  At one point he even invites an audience member up to jam. 6 videos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBcMK1vjWx4&list=PLjiWJF83CBin-10bqDdlDCoWLsmfjXPut

Brothers out of Lewiston, ID brought their youthful energy and rock and roll spirit to the fest.  The guitarist had just turned 21 and they brought a lot of fun to their set.  8 videos:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSGJaBpqm0A&list=PLjiWJF83CBin5L68DNvFfMKrUoo_HY9FK

Jessie Davis out of Brooklyn, NY was the final act of the night.  Great vocals was the showcase along with some thoughtful arrangements of a couple cover tunes.  8 videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqMAmRI-_es&list=PLjiWJF83CBikwYuxe7SMeu8o4bonFG-3F
