I got the itch to break out of the mold of a typical bass player after playing in many alternative bands. I wanted to be able to present whole musical ideas on my bass at one time. When I started to do the solo bass thing, it was tough because I couldn't play everything at once. So, I tried out a Boomerang and that was pretty cool, but the sampling rate wasn't very good and the thing was a little noisy. I upgraded to the Echoplex which blew the doors wide open. I can now do anything I want live with one bass, a bunch of effects and my Echoplex. I like to take a Jazz Standard like 'All Blues' and funk it up a little. I loop the bass line , add the chords and beat on the strings to get a rhythmic thing going. Then I get to improvise. Or, it's nice to make 'whale sounds' and loop that in reverse. My whole solo show pretty much revolves around that Echoplex (when it works as it's supposed to!).
