A guy I'm playing with is using Ableton in live situations. He first had 
the switch "ahead of time" but eventually switched his Behringer midi 
pedal to "switch exactly at the bar". With a bit of training you hit the 
bar exactly, that's not a problem.
Of course, if you have several devices/applications in MIDI sync, I don't 
know if the timing works perfectly then.
