I totally agree with you, and that was the point I was trying to make.  
ie. that the phrase 'software based' is not correct, since most stand  
alone device are actually running software.. and to that end I was  
trying to more clearly draw the line that Sjaak was talking about..  
so, how about 'single purpose stand alone loopers' vs 'multipurpose  
computers running looping software'? lol...
