The set-up  that I'm using with my little Korg DL8000 works like this, too 
(I
just described in a recent posting...)--I  set the feedback amount 
(roughly)
with the expression pedal position (anywhere from Inf. to 0), then I can 
hit
hold to freeze it, un-hold to return to set level, and reduce/increase the
level with the pedal.
