First suggestion: add an instrument to your signal chain, preferably, but not necessarily, at the beginning. :) With a sonic image of what you're playing, I might unload my opinions on youse. Overall, I would definitely put the preamp first. Generally, just plug things in in different orders and use your ears. Make notes. And write things down too.
