echolette,Echorec question

Hi ,

        At work I've just been told to dispose of several thousand record
players that run at 8, 16 and 33rpm. they have 8 inch turntables that
are about  a half inch thick.   Is this physical arrangement appropriate
to make a primitive Echolette or echorec ?  If so it would be a cool use
of what will be trash.
