reel to reel thing
well... i dunno about insight... here's my $.02 anyway...
will the reel spindles turn at all (even if you turn them by hand?) you
might be having a gunk problem.
maybe asses first whether the heads look overly worn or not - since you
don't want to drop a bunch of dough on fixing whatever could br wrong
with the MDA if the heads are toast. you're looking for the obvious -
razorblade scores, shredded bits of metal, etc. if they look real clean,
then look closer at the wear made from the tape path across the head.
does it look like the san pedro ravine, or a just subtle notch, or maybe
nothing at all...
MDA problems - belts, relays, total viscosity breakdown on lube that's
20 yrs old... any and all can happen. sadly, this means you can't test
the brakes either. they may or may not be feeling their age as
well.
since fixing these reel kids can cost as much as fixing REAL kids, it
does become a particular conundrum out of which there may be no easy way.
if you're mech. inclined you might want to just wade in, yknow, for the
"fun of it" - w/ the understanding that hey, if you burn the
roast you'll just go out to eat. (sorry, vegans ;-)
o/wise, could ship it to triple s or (gadzooks!) jrf magnetics... if you,
like, REALLY want it and money's no object...
or, sometimes, what you can do is to take it apart yourself, and
carefully clean it of any dried-up gunk so that the reel pads will turn
by hand, and everything looks as groovy as possible, then bring humpty in
to have all the king's men put him back together again. this way, you
have saved the hourly on the breakdown and stuff you could have done
yourself - but not every repair facility will work w/ you in that way,
and you'd want to asses ahead of time that a job like that is cool w/
them.
ok!

The main issue though is his old Sony tape deck (TC-336 is the model).
The
controls seem to be in order, the LEDs work etc. The only thing that
seems
amiss is that reels won't move when the directional control is engaged.
Could this be a belt issue? I've taken apart a few cassette players for
parts but I've never worked on a reel-to-reel. I definitely don't want to
screw it up, but there's not anywhere around here that could likely fix
it.
It seems to be a really nice deck, and I'd hate for it to just get
scrapped,
especially with the possibility of using it as part of a mastering
chain.
As always any and all insight is much appreciated!
