OT: Wiring a VU meter...

I've got some cool retro VU meters ( needles ) I've collected off
of old discarded audio equipment.  It looks like the
audio signal is just routed to the meters in parallel,
but I'm not sure.  If I want to use them, say, as a VU for a
small mixer that currently has a 4 LED meter, does anyone
know how I might wire it....?
