OT -- Gear for field recording industrial sounds

HI,

A friend of mine("Brian D. Solomon" <brian@goodread.com>) wants to do
a project involving field recording of old and very noisy diesel
locomotives, and is looking for advice on microphones and recording
gear.

He needs to be able to record very low frequency sounds, and the gear
needs to be rugged, as he will have to do a lot of hiking to get to
the locations where he wants to record.

He asked me for suggestions, but I haven't done any sophisticated
field recording, so I'm hoping some of you will have ideas. If you
do, and could be so kind to email Brian directly, he (and I) would
appreciate it. His address again, is, "Brian D. Solomon"
<brian@goodread.com>

Thanks.
