'A friend of mine("Brian D. Solomon" <brian@goodread.com>) wants to do a project involving field recording of old and very noisy diesel locomotives, and is looking for advice on microphones and recording gear' Hi I have recorded a lot of live music (certainly very noisy!) and a brilliant and extremely cheap method is to use a recordable minidisc machine WITH a Sony ECM stereo microphone. Just make sure you can set the recording level on the minidisc machine, and that you get the right Sony microphone: I use an ECM MS907. Theres a more expensive ECM MS957 which apparently lets less noise from handling it get into the actual recording but the cheaper mike is fantastic . (the fact its stereo is a lot of fun too, I recorded a practice recently and listening to it back on decent headphones you can place the musicians around the room.. drums on the left, me in the middle.. on the right my Da coming in to tell us its time for lunch..!) Hope thats a help, Adrian --- "Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)" <emile@foryourhead.com> wrote: > HI, > > A friend of mine("Brian D.
