Perhaps Joseph Aurthur is using the replace function on his Jamman?
The Jamman allows you to operate in replace mode, meaning, ( and
this works best when sending midi clock to the jamman from a
midi drum machine or sequencer), rather than having to switch to,
or create new loops, you can simply replace the previous loop with new
material., but you need to be able to have some kind of time keeping element
in the form of a midi clock , drum machine, etc. otherwise with the exception
of very short loop phrase of a measure or so, its difficult to keep from
dragging or speeding up during replace. Its pretty seemless once you get
the hang of it. I toggle in and out of overdub and replace all the
time when using my jamman. I do this on the Repeater as well, as it
saves memory and allows the music to morph more. I think this type of
feature exitsts on the EDP as well ,but not on the floor loopers. I'd be
curious to know if he is hearing a click or drumpart live through in ear
monitors, otherwise he just has a phenomenal sense of
time.
Hope
that might shed some light

Subject: hi guys--please
help
I'm using a Boss RC-20, trying to loop full
songs by either creating a chord progression for a whole song, then
overdubbing, or stringing together verse and chorus phrases. My music
is like Joseph Arthur's--singer-songwriter, guitar-based with electronic
influences--and I'm heavily into overdubbing voice and guitar.
Anyway, the RC-20's not working for me because
syncing phrases on-the-fly is virtually impossible, from what I can tell,
even with my Boss FS-5U footpedal. (My rhythms are too
complex for that dumb 4/4 quantize.) Also, I want to do whole sets of
3-5 minute songs, and the RC-20 can't handle that much information. I
want to be able to cut-and-paste phrases, too.
I've read all the specs on looper's delight and
searched the archive, and I still can't figure out how to do what Joseph
Arthur is doing with the JamMan--he does whole songs on-the-fly with tons of
overdubs.
So:
1. Does anyone use the RC-20 for gigging, and
if so, how do you make use of it?
2. Should I buy another looper? I
need a lot of memory, etc.--is EDP my only
real option?
3. What about using a Zoom MRS-802CD or
other digital recorder with a looping function? Does anyone use one of
these onstage?
Any comments would be most
welcome.
