I bought a new sound card, a Creative Labs Audigy 2
for laptops, which plugs into my PCMCIA card slot. The ASIO driver that comes
with the card is the key. I can get my suggested latency down to 5 ms. On my
system, if I try anything lower than 40ms on my standard sound card and driver,
it freaks out and makes all sorts of crackly noise. 5ms is ideal. 10ms
works for me too.
However, on my work notebook, I downloaded the ASIO
For All driver (http://www.asio4all.com/), for my stock
sound card, and it worked excellent...not latency, and I set it to 5ms with not
freaking out. So, if you are on a budget and can only go with your standard
notebook soundcard, this might be an option.
I thought of buying some other USB or Firewire
system in I/O, but honestly, the Creative Labs card I'm using now is perfect for
my needs, 32 bit, crystal clear, lots of control with the software, etc. I
run into my Boss VF1, out to my computer's soundcard, and then back into my
mixer board, where I run my two EDPs in two busses, and my reverb unit in AUX 1.
You can configure the Audigy's output to Dolby as well, 5 outputs, I
believe. There is a small connector next to the mini output plug that splits
into multiple outputs.
How many complicated plugins you can run depends on
the VST host you are using and your laptop. On my sytem, I can easily run a
basic chorus plugin, delay plugin, and easily two complex plugins like Antares
Filter and PSP84. More than that, and my processor usage bar line starts
getting dangerously close to the limit.
