THiS Tuesday January 17th . Reflectiostack and Worma Reflectiostack's new album, "Music for Torching", explores what seems to be rapidly becoming a new genre: folktronica, post-folk, or whatever else you'd like to call it. "The Stack" blend electronica with rhythmic guitars, moody violins, and haunting vocals; the result of a decade of musical exploration. In a live context, these core elements are expanded through the addition of bass, synth, pedals, and a sampler/sequencer. Reflectiostack's 'AMBiENT PiNG' set will showcase songs from "Music for Torching", as well as some new material that delves further into the creation of dynamic soundscapes. http://www.reflectiostack.com Worma's soothing rhythms will transport your thoughts to distant dimensions. Her tranquil, yet dynamic melodies both soothe and arouse the savage breast. Prepare to be entranced. http://www.worma.com . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Before Sets CD . A Million Stories by Sara Ayers This hauntingly beautiful CD by Sara Ayers is another of the PiNG's favourite releases from 2005. A surreal, intricately woven wash of sounds that ebb and flow from heartbreak to ecstasy, from hushed to lush -- a 38-minute tone poem that weaves in and around itself. http://www.saraayers.com/ Between Sets CD . Equally exciting is the release of a new set of work inspired by his rediscovery of the soundworlds and wonder of "Dreamtime Return". "New Life Dreaming" is a selection of music that captures the essence and flow of it's musical predecessor, just as capably recreating the beauty and wonder that has defined Roach's work for so long. The disc begins with "Perfect Dream", where a variety of smooth pads blend into each other, dissolving into new sounds, tones rising and falling. It's a beautiful example of aural imaging where serene landscapes take form in the minds eye, slowly building in detail and shape until you can't help but feel that you are there. "Where I Live" follows, the sound of birds and other nightlife filling the sound spectrum. A low and steady drone plays beneath as pads rise up and dance along beside you for only a moment. It's like being transported to another place, a desert space where beautiful open land surrounds you and the sky stretches as far as you can see. Simply breathtaking. Up next is "The Ancients' Way", a mystical and enigmatic piece that opens with a spiraling drone leading into a kaleidoscope of shifting tones and patterns, snippets of melody, a phrase and a tune passing through your mind before you have the chance to register it fully. "Deep Sky Time" opens up with lightly percolating synths that run just along the edge of a deep droning tone. As the song progresses, tones take on greater form, substance and clarity, gaining a distinct shape and texture. It's a wonderful sensation, a beautiful moment of realization. The last track, "In The Eye of Noche", closes the disc with processed piano, guitar, and mournful vocals (courtesy of the very wonderful Jennifer Grais), all combining to create a dreamlike procession through a series of soundworlds and other places. A very appropriate and very beautiful way to end the disc. There is no question that Steve Roach has become synonymous with ambient music, that he is recognized as having a mastery of the art of aural landscapes and audio imagining. With the release of "New Life Dreaming", Roach reaffirms his status as a true artist among artists and resets the standard by which all others are compared. "New Life Dreaming" is beautiful music by a master of the genre and comes very highly recommended.
