If its a pretty old version, Pd might be close to that now. Main difference is UI objects, which are way more advanced in Max. In general you can do anything with both. Certainly looping software. jMax died recently and the better parts of it have been put into FTM which is a library for Max, and since shortly also for Pd. Though jMax is open source, I don't think anybody is developing it any further... If you can't afford Max, get into Pd...
