I can notice my playing varies depending on the addition of a simply 
ambience reverb/delay if listening to the realtime wet signal or let it 
dry. 
So I'd say the effect, in this case, it's essential, at least, for the 
timbrical caracteristics and then is an extension of what i consider 'the 
instrument'.
