There is a good long term reason why .ogg:
MP3 isn’t free. For eons Fraunhofer has very openly “licensed”
MP3 compression and playback technology, but they do so at a cost, and the
source code for the central algorithms is patented. In addition,
Alcatel-Lucent has started to assert their mutual rights to this original
patent that they helped with, to the tune of a 1.35 BILLION dollar lawsuit
which they just WON against Microsoft. Certainly this will go to appeal,
but in general it’s now clear that given the value of this format,
inventors are seeking to cash in. Ogg Vorbis (the full name of the
compression technology used to create .ogg audio files) is open source and
patent free. Free = Good. That being said, .ogg is only playable on
a tiny range of hardware and software, and no company has a financial incentive
to add .ogg to the files they handle, there’s no royalties or business
deals or $$$ with .ogg unless zillions of consumers demand support for
it. Sucks. -Miles From: Richard Sales
