For something a bit in  this "vein", take a listen to "Street Song" by Carl Orff.
Maybe not very "melancholy", but certainly beautiful in it's own minimalist, "organic" way. Even kind of "bittersweet".
And, Rick W being also a percussionist will likely appreciate this. (hopefully)
It is one that I have loved greatly for years. Not very long time wise, but has always had a real impact on me.

Hear it here:

This song was a part of Orff's "Music for Children"
More info:

While we are mentioning that , there is also the exquisite
Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste/ by Bela Bartok

Another of my LONG time faves!  I actually was first exposed to this incredible piece of music
ages ago as part of the sndtrk to Kubrick's "The Shining".
I immediately went out to explore and  learn more about Bartok...

'The Shining' sndtrk also has a couple of  excellent electronic impressionistic "sound paintings" by the long time,
and always brilliant Wendy Carlos. There is also either some Ligeti, or Penderecki (or both?) on that sndtrk,
but I do not have in handy at the moment to check. Luckily I do still have my copy of the original LP. (stored away)
TMK, it was never reissued as an LP again, or as a CD. I have never found it at least, and have looked for any CD.

All the best,
