That's because it's one of the modes of the ascending melodic minor.

1 2 b3 4 5 6 7 8va

They all produce melodies that sound familiar within
the Western European classical idiom, while having
an unusual harmonic flavour.

Another quick easy to get example would be "Phrygian with 
a natural 6"
