Two things:
1. integrated devices. A distortion stomp box and a filter rack effect 
doesn't make sense, a multi-effect device does. Typically, the highest 
degree of multi-purpose integration is a (I'm not saying "laptop") computer.
2. find out what you need and leave everything else at home.

Optional:
3. if 2 sometimes changes, make your setup modular. If you already use a 
computer, this is not so much a consideration, but stilll, you might 
have an optional monitor or faderbox that you don't need under all 
circumstances.

And finally:
4. the package is one of the most important aspects when it comes to 
portability.
