IDM is really a label that a record executive came up with to sell dance music to people who don't dance... that being said, there is some really good stuff out there (I like Amon Tobin a lot). I think of IDM as electroacoustic music with a beat (or without a beat, there are few rules). There's definitely a greater emphasis on sound design and process and the song forms are less predictable. Like Per said, it's not a genre in the usual sense... You'll have to figure out your own thing. I think you should spend some time with some good books, such as: - Holme's Electronic and experimental Music (historical) - Demer's Listening through the noise (aesthetics) - Hugil's The Digital Musician (technical, social, aesthetics, historical, etc... it has an amazing bibliography) and so on... reading such books and listening to the suggested discography should help you gain perspective on your music and ultimately make it sound more mature and, perhaps, more intelligent ;) Sylvain
