Re: SoftStep Nav Keys

<<Finally, it's goodbye to my Softstep controller, bane of my life >>

Still a bane, since it's been replaced?

I confess! I dunnit. I think the one posted on that page link is a pretty old version. I'm constantly fiddling with it & making slight changes, but I'll post a 'latest' update to the plogue forum.

Of course you have to use Mob as a plug-in in plogue for it to work, but....  :)

I've also found that with the latest firmware, I don't get the raw CCs output, it defaults to a progchange scene. So I have to boot the bloatware first, set an 'INIT' state on the hardware, then shut down the KMI app & boot up plogue. Then it works. Tedious, but...I'm just investigating max/msp runtime to see if any of Tom Swirly's patches would help in this respect.

Apart from not taking 1GB+ of memory, this solution also gives me four functions for each pad - fiddly to use, but versatile.

Ah, just found a more up-to-date (more efficient?) version up there:

Yes, it's possible, there's a guy on the Mobius forum that made a Bidule group to do something similar.

I'm pretty sure someone made a Max/MSP patch but I can't find it right now.

I had considered writing a little VST plugin to do the MIDI translation but lost interest in it
after they fixed standalone mode.

Well I'm part way there.. Using MIDI Pipe I've got the standalone CC
messages translated to the desired Note... But in still getting loads of
pressure data messages... So instead of a clean Note On / Note Off, I'm
getting dozens of one or the other, with variable pressure values for each
one.

It's enough to make me believe its possible, and to indicate that at this
point the challenge is in the MIDI translator, rather than the SoftStep.

Hey Phil,
When I got my SoftStep I wanted to use the navigation keys in the same
way but abandoned the Idea, when i realized it's not possible by default. I
never thought of hacking it, as I'm not very familiar with all the computer
stuff. If you find way to do the trick, please let me know.

Any SoftStep users here successfully hacked the Nav keys for your own
evil purposes?

SS is a promising lightweight portable foot controller but the gotcha
(for me) is the relatively hard coded nature of the Nav keys.

These keys ought to be perfect to use for next and previous loop
commands across one axis, and next/previous layer or scene or whatever,
across the other axis. Echoloop, EDP, Mobius style workflow.

I've been messing with MIDI Pipe and MIDI Translator to try to convert
SoftStep's output to simple Note On and Note Off messages, with only partial
successŠ in Standalone mode with Scene Change set to OFFŠ so I'm getting CC
messages 80, 81, 82, 83 from the SS nav keysŠ

Any insights out there?

Phil :)
