I'm thinking I might still just go with Bidule. I'm gonna test run it for a while to see if it will work correctly but I think it might be just what I need.

..and I'd also agree it's often 3rd party plugins that cause problems,
especially on the later Windows.
What would have been a helpful error message in WinXP, (which the host
has handled correctly and safely), can cause the host to be shut down
by Win 7 (and Win 8).
( I've got first hand experience as a programmer for Windows apps
that Win 7,8 does this...it's connected with Windows'improved'
