Excellent post, Reyn! Thank you for sharing this essential knowledge! I remember noticing your video actually had kept the stereo sound. So Flash is the secret. I'll do Flash from now on instead of Apple's bundled free i-ware ;-)) 19:

Hey Reyn, can you explain how to download and encode avideo from youtube with flash,i suppose i would needthe program, right?cheersLuis 20:
Hi, I just happened to see this post and thought it might speed things up if I can throw in an answer, although Luis is addressing Reyn here. Well, the answer is you can't. If a video is in mono on YouTube it will still be in mono if you download it, so if you convert it into Flash it will not magically become stereo. But what this is all about is when you are not downloading but rather creating a video. What Reyn is saying is that you should save it as a Flash file instead of Quicktime or whatever format you are working with. As far as I know you have to use the Flash application for doing that. Since I own the Logic Pro Studio I also have Compressor, but I'm not in a position right now to see if Compressor (OS X) can export Flash. When I made Flash cartoon movies in the past I was using Flash

On that topic I'm using a Mackie 1620 Onyx mixer as my 'soundcard'. But that mixer "should" have very low latency. I do rather use a pretty long Firewire cable, but that should be fine right? I'll try the MIDI delay idea. That sounds like a solid solution.. Thanks.Cheers,Reynwww.reyn.netOn Nov 24, 2009, at 11:55 PM, Jeff Larson wrote: There are a lot of choices for audio hardware depending on yourpreferences, but one thing is absolutely required: an ASIO devicedriver. You don't usually get an ASIO driver with built-in audiohardware which is probably why you had high latency. On a modern machine you should be able to run smoothly with a 128sample block size. There will be one of these on both the input andoutput sides for a "round trip" latency of 256 samples or 5.805milliseconds at a sample rate of 44.1K. The general belief is that latency below 10 milliseconds becomes verydifficult to notice as long as it stays fixed. Even if you do notice,it is usually possible to adjust your playing style to compensate justlike you do when you play with a monitor speaker more than 6 feetaway. Accoustic players may be more sensitive to this. The actual ASIO block size you can use is dependent on many things:the speed of the CPU, the amount of memory, the applications you haverunning at the same time, the firewire chipset (if you use a firewireaudio interface) the graphics card memory, etc. If the block size is toosmall the system won't be able to keep up with requests from thehardware and you will year "clicks". The important thing to understand is that latency isn't some fixedquality of Ableton or the audio hardware, it is something you tune tobe as low as possible for your combination of hardware and software. It's sort of like finding the highest stable operating speed of a car. If you've got a machine less than 2 years old with carefully selectedcomponents and you've been careful about what software you haveinstalled then a 128 block size is to be expected, and I'veseen some go as low at 64. I've never heard of 32 under Windowsor Mac. If you've got a 5 year old machine with under 1GB of memory and alot of software installed then you might have problems getting thatwithout a lot of tuning if you can get it at all. On a standard laptop sound setup w/o special audio hardware (just as a test bed) the latency was too long for my taste. My old desktop rig has an old Echo Gina card / break-out box, but is ancient hardware (PIII, believe it or not); haven't tried it there yet. I'm planning on upgrading this machine though. What are most Windows folks using for the audio hardware these days, and what should be typical good/expected latency times w/Ableton?
