My take on this is boring and predictable, but has to be said: Identify the software you want to use, then get the hardware that will run it. For example, if you decide you have an immediate need for Max, a graphical programming toolkit for MIDI and other music applications, then you go with a Mac or an SGI workstation. The latest version of the bio for Miller Puckette, creator of Max, says that a Windows version is a possibility, but it may be quite a wait.
