I think a basic 4 track recorder like a Tascam/Fostex etc.. would serve 
your 
needs better than a looper.  If all you are interested in at the moment is 
practice dont worry about analogue (cassette) vrs digital argument, it 
dosen't matter.  Buy something you know you can understand and work, 
prefrebly cheap, and get playing, isnt that the whole purpose? Or maybe 
you 
play solos while you son plays 12 bar and then change round.
