But what do we mean when we say that an abstract instrumental peice of music tells a STORY!! It can't really, can it? Can there be meaning in an improvisation?? Is there meaning in a composition? What is the meaning with "green onions" or Bethovens 5th or Kind of blue. A story needs meaning, doesn't it??
I would say that my attempts at looping tells a story but soloing over backings does not. And there where not that much storytelling in playing "Sweet home alabama" in a cover band :-)
 
But WHY do we feel that some music tells a STORY, there are no narrative elements, we clearly mean something else than a story in a book, don't we?
SORRY I do like to read philosophy, Wittgenstein and that type of stuff. I feel that we use story in a very loose an undefined we, are we playing the same game?

I suppose by story and not story I more meant pre thought story vs found in the moment story, if going by the meanings I see you utilizing.  For yes, music is inherently about story telling in it's nature.  So... how many folks pre think their story, and how many find it finding them, perhaps is a better question?  Or since many of us probably do both, tell how each comes up in your music making (question for all)?
