I suppose an independent power supply is subject to the same danger, although, not a part of the same port carrying the signal. Maybe frequent checking of cables and connectors is the answer.

USB cables can also carry power, would you suppose that that the same risk applies? Cables undergo stress and eventually fail as a matter of course. If the cable is going to jeopardize the equipment, I would limit myself to buying things that had an independent power supply and only sent signal over the wire.

The firewire connectors are pretty fragile, and certainly the circuit board in Matthias' firewire guitar fried do to a bad connection.
I think it was the socket in that case, but the overall design isn't
robust. ( certainly not good to use a guitar lead )

The cable carries power, and there isn't much separating the power connection
to the signal connection. andy
