Re: Rick's percussion post

Interesting thread.

I must say that Im totally with Rick when it comes to making loops that dont sound "real". Why should they? In todays world its so easy to make things sound "real"  on a recording, that live it seems a bit silly.  There are so many options in the computer artistes palette, it seems very restrictive to choose "real sounding drums" when theses sounds can be made by... hitting real drums.

I must say I veer from Ricks opinion about the musician HAVING to make the rythyms "on the spot". I have never seen the problem in using pre-made loops that spin in and out of the mix.

Theres no worse kinda looping to me than this " Watch and marvel as I create a whole track out of nothing...
"Heres the drums, here comes the bass, here comes the rythym.. then 5 minutes into the track we have all the instruments going and the song can now start"
Im a guitarist, why the fuck should I have to be a drummer too... fuck that. People can see Im drumming on my guitar neck or beat-boxing because I dont have a friend who can actually PLAY the drums... but If I use a drum machine or loops, well then its just seems part of the track...
Now dont get me wrong, drumming on the neck i of course a totally usable guitarist technique, but its a bit dull at looping shows when I have to sit thru a few minutes of the guy setting up the loops... the days are gone where I would marvel at looping, "OooOOohh how clever" .. Every kid in Norway has at least a RC20 now, I see a tiny bit of looping at most shows I go to, but very few are "loopers" of the LD variety. What differentiates us from the crowd (not to get too elitists about it) is that we have dedicated our whole sound to looping, as such.. arn't we also over the...
"Everything I do must be done BY looping"
thing.
