I've noticed the same phenomenon with my two EDPs. It is a slight annoyance for recording, but I've learned to live with it. Sometimes when I master my live recordings, I use a de-hisser. Actually, I found this hiss very disappointing, given how much EDPs cost...my old Boss RC-20 was absolutely silent. As you say, the EDPs are quiet when you record, then when you hit the record button again and the first loop starts to play, the hiss comes in. Sadly, this will probably wear on me psychologically over time and I'll end up looking for a new looping device, either computer- based, or some new single, stereo rack mount looper that comes out.....didn't someone in this list mention a new unit coming out in the market? The crazy thing is that I have a rack full of effects, from old Lexicon LXPs to the VF-1, and none produce a hiss like the EDPs....and it's both EDPs, so it's not like one is defective. I've tried all sorts of experiments as well....higher input levels, higher or lower output levels on the EDPs, running them in the AUX channel of my board and running the mix at max, etc, etc...all just ineffective ways to mask the underlying problem. The problem is accentuated by the fact that I play very clean...either acoustic guitar, or jazz guitar clean. I'm not using any distortion that is noisy to begin with....when I'm playing a delicate acoustic guitar melody with really low dynamics and then loop it, that's when the ugly head of HISS is most apparent. And I don't even use the full capabilities of the EDPs. I use Record, Multiply, Overdub, Mute, and Insert for Reverse....nothing else. If I could find a single rack stereo unit that did this, I'd sell both of my EDPs. I'll be awaiting any clever responses to this thread. ************************************************************************ ************** Krispen Hartung http://www.krispenhartung.com info@krispenhartung.com View improvisational / real-time looping videos: http://www.myweb.cableone.net/chagstrom2/music/kris-hartung/catalogue.ht m#videos Interactive tour of my gear: http://www.boisemusicians.com/gear.htm -----Original Message----- From: Tom Combs [mailto:tcombs@sep.com] Sent: Saturday, March 05, 2005 9:59 AM To: loopers-delight@loopers-delight.com Subject: EDP Hiss Hey EDP gurus I've been experiencing some significant hiss during loop playback. I've tried swapping memory around - no success. The hiss is present even when I record a loop with the input level at minimum. The hiss is not present while recording, but it appears immediately after the second press of RECORD to start loop playback. The hiss goes away when I set the MIX to dir. It gets louder as I more the MIX to loop. My EDP has always been hissy - I don't know if it's gotten worse lately or if I'm more tuned into it. I guess this could be normal behavior for the EDP, but I can't imagine this much noise being acceptable to the looping community. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom
